Peruvian Retablos on display at NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa

19.10.2026 - 06.11.2026

Discover the Living Art of Peru

From 19 October to 6 November 2026, a selection of traditional Ayacucho retablos will be on display at NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa, next to our Secret Garden bridge after our hotel reception. The exhibition is presented by the Embassy of Peru in Finland.

Originating from the Andean region of Ayacucho, retablos are handcrafted three-dimensional artworks made from wood and plaster. Their intricate miniature figures and richly detailed scenes portray Peruvian traditions, religious celebrations, community life and everyday moments. For generations, Ayacucho artists have used retablos to preserve stories, memories and cultural traditions. Each work offers a small window into Peruvian life, combining remarkable craftsmanship with storytelling and symbolism.

Peruvian retablos are handcrafted wooden boxes filled with carefully sculpted and painted miniature figures that depict scenes
of everyday life, celebrations, religious devotion, traditions and historical memory. Originating in the Andean region of Ayacucho,
retablos are among the most emblematic expressions of Peruvian popular art.

The word «retablo» comes from the Spanish tradition of church altarpieces. During the colonial period, portable devotional boxes
containing images of saints were introduced to the Andes by Spanish missionaries. Over time, artists transformed these objects
into a uniquely Peruvian art form, blending Catholic imagery with Indigenous worldviews, local traditions, and contemporary
experiences.

Discover these vibrant works and explore the rich cultural heritage of Peru in the heart of Helsinki.
